Miguel Barrientos – age: 91 years 4 months 11 days

Beloved Son, Brother, Husband, Father,

Grandfather and Great Grandfather.

But above all a Trusted and Valued Colleague,

Friend and Confidant.

On the morning of March 11th, 2021 Miguel Barrientos heard the call to come home and chose to do just that, he went home to be guided by the hand of God into the arms of his family, friends, and extended families.

Miguel was born in the small township of Phelan, Bastrop County, Texas on Sunday – September 29th, 1929. The 13th child born, the eighth son to Jesus and Maria Ricarda (Gallegos) Barrientos formerly from Bastrop County.

His beloved brothers and sisters, also formerly from Bastrop County joined their parents at Heavens’ Haven in making a wonderful new homesite for their youngest brother and son.

Miguel grew up in Bastrop County attended Bastrop ISD segregated school until the 3rd grade and when not assisting the family on working other farms or homestead, he worked weekends at the City Bowling Alley as a Pin-Setter.  When the 2nd World War broke out in December 1941, Miguel and his brothers would sell vegetables and refreshments to the soldiers stationed on Camp Swift – Bastrop, Texas.

In 1944 Miguel and two of his brothers volunteered for the U.S. Army going to bootcamp in Brownsville, Texas. Miguel was assigned to the U.S. Army Air Corps assigned to the Pacific Theater and in August 1947 was then transferred to the U.S. Air Force. Sr. MSgt Miguel Barrientos retired Honorably in 1972, having served 28 years. During his Military tour, Miguel took advantage of the Military Educational Services and obtained his High School Diploma. After retirement from military service, Miguel worked 20 years for the U.S. Postal Service in Austin, Texas.

Miguel married Gloria (Galvan) in February 1951 and together they sired three sons, Enrique Rolando Barrientos, Eduardo Rene’ Barrientos, Ernesto Ruben Barrientos and one daughter, Cathleen Ursula (Barrientos) Gruetzner.  Gloria joined her Heavenly family in the year of our Lord, 1992, having shared 41 years of an adventurous marriage.

Miguel than reacquainted his friendship with a little girl from his third-grade year at the Bastrop Elementary and that friendship grew into a comfortable companionship. In December 1994 Miguel married the former Mrs. Celia (Coy) and her three children.

Miguel and Celia were fortune enough to have shared their 25th Anniversary in December 2020.

Miguel was preceded in death by his 1st wife:  Gloria (Galvan) Barrientos, his Parents, and all of his siblings and their spouses.

Survivors include his wife, Celia Barrientos; children – Rick Barrientos, Rene’ and Nancy Barrientos, Cathleen and Richard Gruetzner, and Ruben Barrientos; grandchildren – Brittany and Jason McClitis, Nicholas Barrientos, Michael Barrientos, and Mason Barrientos; and great grandchildren – Isaiah and Embrie Barrientos, Maya and Eve McClitis, and Milo Barrientos. In addition, Miguel is survived by Celia’s family members, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Miguel’s long-time caregiver, Herminia Suarez Diaz, for her loving care. Herminia was more than a caregiver – Miguel considered her a part of his family. In addition, special thanks to all of the compassionate professionals at Resolutions Hospice, Bastrop. We are forever grateful for their kindness and exemplary care of Miguel over the past two years.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family has made the difficult decision to have a private graveside service for the immediate family.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions can be made in Miguel’s name to Resolutions Hospice or Dementia Society of America.
