Irmgard Murphy

August 16, 1938 — November 9, 2021

Bastrop, Texas

Irmgard Elonore Karin Bredno Murphy, affectionately known as our “Omi”, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loved ones on Tuesday morning, November 9, 2021 at the age of 83.

Irmgard was born in Berlin, Germany, August 16, 1938, where she lived in foster care until she was 17 years old. She then met her hero, soulmate, love of her life, best friend and who would be her forever life partner, Hugh Murphy. She came to America at the age of 18 in November 1956 and quickly married Hugh on December 1, 1956.

Omi would always say, “her life started when she got to America”. They moved to New Orleans immediately following their wedding and had their first of three wonderful children in March, 1958, 1960 and 1962. The family moved to Texas in 1971 where they spent the next 50 years. She and her husband lived in the Houston area, Livingston and for the last 18 years, her final resting place in Bastrop, TX. Omi was blessed to spend her life watching her beloved family flourish.

Irmgard was a stay-at-home mom and spent her years doing things she loved; She had a love for sewing. As a young woman, she made most of her own clothes, as well as clothes for her daughter. Omi also had an avid talent for quilt making, she made many quilts for her family members. Omi enjoyed cooking, especially for her family, no one would ever leave hungry and there would be leftovers for days! She enjoyed bird watching and her most precious pastime was spending time with family. She and her husband Hugh spent a lot of time traveling, had a particular love for cruises and going back to her beloved home in Germany as well as summer trips to Michigan, where her life “truly started”. She was tough as nails, had an incredible sense of humor, wittiness for days, and the most loving heart a person could have. Her presence and smile alone could fill a room with joy. She made an impact on anyone who was blessed enough to meet her. She absolutely loved animals, but never a huge fan of squirrels. Irmgard was a truly remarkable person that we are fortunate to have had in our lives.

Irmgard is survived by her husband and soulmate, Hugh Murphy; sister, Brigitte Kupfer and family; children, Rosemary Krause, David Murphy and Daniel Murphy; eleven (11) grandchildren and seven (7) great-grandchildren.
