Helen Simmons

February 2, 1936 — January 8, 2021

Helen Doris Simmons went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 8, 2021 at the age of 84. She was born in Bryan, Texas in 1936 to Effie and John Henry Clyburn.

Helen was mainly a stay at home Mom but back in the 1970s she was a waitress at the original Night Hawk Steakhouse in Austin for about a year.  In 1982 she went to work at Travis State School and quickly became a supervisor working with MHMR residents.  After the state schools closed, she ran private group homes.  She would host picnics at her home for the residents.  After retirement she had more time for the things she enjoyed like working in her beautiful yard, cross stitching, crocheting and creating scrapbooks of all the photos she took over the years.  In her later years she loved to spend time playing dominoes and bingo with her friends.

She is preceded in death by husband, Charles Simmons; son, Rick Simmons; her beloved sister, Ruth Mattice; and brother John Willard Clyburn (who died in 1943 in WWII during invasion of Italy).

Helen is survived by her daughter, Sharon Humphrey and her husband Rhett; sons, Ralph Simmons and his wife Bidelia, Kevin Simmons and his wife Debbie; grandchildren Melissa Urso, Jacob Humphrey, Heidi Simmons, Crystal Simmons, and many other loved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She also is survived by 5 brothers - Bill Clyburn, Dan Clyburn, Bob Clyburn, Will Clyburn and John Clyburn as well as numerous extended family and friends.Due to Covid and concerns on safety, the family will privately celebrate Helen's life and she will be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery.
