Claire Fitzgerald

September 14, 1936 — July 28, 2022

Bastrop

Claire Sarah Ann LeBlanc Fitzgerald died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, July 28, 2022 at the age of 85. She was born in Winthrop, Massachusetts on September 14, 1936 to Roy and Sarah LeBlanc of Wedgeport, Nova Scotia. After high school Claire attended a two-year secretarial school and was employed by Keystone Company. During her early years she enjoyed attending Boston supper clubs to hear Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, and others. Claire enjoyed vacationing in Bermuda as a young, single woman.

In 1960 she met John F. Fitzgerald, Jr. at a dance and after a short courtship they married in 1961. Claire and John lived in Randolph, Massachusetts and had four daughters. In 1968 the family moved to Madison, Wisconsin where John completed his Ph.D. During their three years in Madison, a fifth daughter was born. Upon John’s completion of his doctorate the family relocated to Warwick, Rhode Island where Claire raised her five daughters, was an active member of St. Catherine’s Church, especially their Las Vegas Nights, worked at the polls and served as a PTA volunteer.

In 1983 the family moved to Austin, Texas. After a divorce in 1985, Claire returned to Boston to live with her sister, Louise. She worked at Chartwell Home Health in the lab department as an administrative assistant. In 1997, she and Louise made their home in Bastrop, Texas where she lived until the time of her death.  When her sister was diagnosed with Lewy Body Disease, she became Louise’s primary caregiver. Church was very important to her and the supportive community of Bastrop Christian Outreach Center (BCOC) brought her great comfort, joy and fulfillment. She loved attending Branches of Gold on Friday nights and weekly Bible studies. Other passions included the Boston Red Sox and playing Scrabble and Whist.

Claire was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2015 and thanks to the constant care of her daughter, Denise Busche, and many outside caregivers, she was able to stay in her home to the end. Although the disease created physical challenges, Claire was able to free herself of worries often reminding her family that life is short and everything works out.

She is survived by her five daughters: Jeanne Langsdorf (Stephen) of Maine and Florida, Laurie Choquette (Jack) of Indiana, Maureen Stanek (Scott) of Bastrop, Denise Busche (Michael) of Bastrop, and Susan Fitzgerald of Austin. Seven grandchildren: Natasha and Austin Langsdorf; Natalia Haywood (Dustin) and Julianna Tomasso; and Anna Salone (Jon), Lindsay and Andrew Stanek. And three great grandchildren: Michael Gomes, Jaianna Courtemanche, and Liam Salone.

Claire was predeceased by her parents, Roy and Sarah LeBlanc and her sister Louise.

The family would like to thank Kathy Kelley for over eight years of compassionate care and caregivers Janie Whitaker and Maricela Godinez.
