On Sunday, December 12, 2021, Bobby Gene Doran Sr. passed away in his home in Bastrop, TX.
Bobby was born in San Angelo, TX on June 19, 1937 to Max Doran and Maudie (Prosise) Doran. He grew up on a west Texas ranch where his mother worked cooking meals for the ranch hands. The family later moved to Austin, where as a young man he worked in a gas station. On July 26, 1957, he married Charlotte Pirkle in the 1st double wedding to ever be held in Gonzales, Texas. Early in their marriage they enjoyed countless hours participating in rodeo events. He loved calf roping and helping his daughter with the numerous events she would enter.
Bobby started working with his mentor and boss, Mr. Pauls, in the concrete business. With only 2 trucks and some hand tools between them, they turned the startup company into a successful business and ran it for over 25 years. When Mr. Paul’s decided to retire, Bobby took over the company and ran it for an additional 10 years before he retired. His most memorable work was done when an artist approached his company in 1981 to build a sculpture called “Time Span” on the Laguna Gloria art museum grounds. It still stands there today, forty years later. He enjoyed working with his hands and did anything from building houses to working on cars.
After moving to Bastrop he built the home he resided in. Along with his son and grandson, he restored a 1959 El Camino, similar to the first vehicle he owned when he started working in his company. Upon retirement, he joined the Bastrop Car Club. Later, he discovered Cowboy Action Shooting and joined the Plum Creek Shooting Society and Darby Rough Regulators, using the handle of “The Adobe Kid”. He won lots of awards in his age class. He also pointed out that it helps to be the only one in that age class.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Charlotte (Pirkle) Doran; daughter, Gayla Kieke; and grandson, Lee Hendrich.
He is survived by his son, Bobby Doran Jr.; and by his grandchildren, Maggie Botello, Jason Hamilton, Marguerite Doran and Stephen Doran. Great grandchildren: Kelsey Heiting, Alex Botello, Mark Botello, Aaron Botello, Emma Botello, Gabriel Botello, Dominic Botello, Desiree Kieke, Allen Kieke, Hayley Hamilton and Kasidy Hendrich.
