Zelma Herndon

February 28, 1930 — September 5, 2018

Zelma Mae Maxfield Herndon, affectionately known by "Momma, Sis, and Granny" formerly of Dumas, TX, passed away on September 5, 2018 in Smithville Texas. Zelma was born to A.H. and Nellie (Cummins) Maxfield on February 28, 1930 in Hollis, Oklahoma. She attended Hollis Elementary and Bivins Schools and graduated from Dumas High School in 1948.

On August 10, 1947, she married Gary L. Herndon. Zelma was a homemaker for many years as well as Boy Scout leader, Sunday School Teacher, and well known for her hospitality and pecan pies. She worked as a Deputy County Clerk at Moore County and Bastrop County prior to retirement. Zelma was always active in her church and communities. She was a long time member of Calvary Baptist Church in Dumas and a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church in Smithville.

Zelma was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Artiss Joy Heffley. Survivors are her loving husband Gary L. Herndon her five children, Ted (Sandra) Herndon, Lynnette (Robert) Fortenberry, Jim Herndon, Len (Carma) Herndon, and Joyce (Richard) Bowden, her brother, Archie Maxfield, 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren with 2 more on the way, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be Sunday, September 9, 2018 at Trinity Baptist Church in Smithville, Texas at 3:00 p.m. Mrs. Herndon will be laid to rest in Clarendon, Tx. Memorials may be made to Trinity Baptist Church, 607 Loop 230 West, Smithville, Texas 78957 in memory of Zelma Herndon.
