Wayne Verlan Brooks, age 90, passed away peacefully, surrounded by
   
   family and a loving and caring community on Thursday, April 12, 2018,
   
   at Autumn Wood Assisted Living in Mineola, Texas. He was born
   
   September 5, 1927 in Lula, Oklahoma to David Galloway Brooks and
   
   Mae (Roach) Brooks.
   
   
   He was educated in Oklahoma where he obtained
   
   a teaching certificate from Southeastern Oklahoma State College after
   
   serving in the Air Force from 1948 to 1952.
   
   
   He married Betty Ruth Holland in 1951 and together they had four
   
   children. He continued to serve in the United States Army Reserve
   
   where he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer. He also retired from
   
   his concurrent career with the Internal Revenue Service. He
   
   subsequently worked as the Director for the City of Bastrop Housing
   
   Authority until he retired again. He continued to be active in Bastrop
   
   Schools serving as a substitute teacher.
   
   
   He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Bastrop and
   
   served with the Baptist Men to assist in disaster clean-up after the
   
   death of his wife, Betty, in 2007.
   
   
   In the face of declining health, Wayne continued to remain active
   
   within the assisted living communities of Bastrop and Mineola. He
   
   was a beloved member of both communities, participating in
   
   activities daily.
   
   
   Wayne is survived by: children, Jerry Wayne Brooks and wife Kathy
   
   of Mineola, TX, Michael R. Brooks and wife Sheila of Rockport, TX,
   
   Elizabeth R. Barnstead of Austin, TX, and Rebecca Sullivan and
   
   husband Carl of Frisco, TX. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren,
   
   18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
   
   
   He was preceded in death by his wife Betty; a grandson, William
   
   Barnstead; and a great-grandson, Cody Brooks.
   
   
   Family, friends and others whose lives Wayne touched are invited
   
   to the Marrs-Jones-Newby Funeral Home, 505 Old Austin Hwy.,
   
   Bastrop, TX for visitation on Sunday, April 15, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.
   
   and to a Celebration of Life on Monday, April 16, 2018 at 10:00 am.
   
   Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bastrop, TX.
