Sharon Dean Hicks passed from this world on December 5, 2017, in Austin, Texas, surrounded by family and friends at the age of 73. Sharon was born on April 28, 1944, to Loyd and Novie Dean in Anadarko, Oklahoma. The family moved to Kermit, Texas, in 1950, where Sharon grew up and graduated from high school. Sharon was an active member of the Frist Baptist Church, the Gas, played the clarinet in the band and was a twirler through her graduation in 1962. She then went on to attend West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas.

On June 3, 1965, Sharon married Gary Hicks. Sharon and Gary were married for 27 years. They resided in Kermit, Dallas, Odessa, and then Alvin, Texas. Sharon had four sons, David, Gary, Cary and Rocky. She was awarded a Master's degree in literature from the University of Houston in Clearlake, Texas. She graduated with honors while raising her sons. She was the author of Bargain Night at the Psalm, a book written for her master's thesis, and she continued to publish throughout her career. After receiving her Master's, Sharon embarked on her teaching career which spanned over 20 years. She taught in many schools in the Houston area and then in the central Texas area. She touched the lives of thousands of students, helping many to get accepted into college and sharing her love of the written word and her joy of learning with them all.

After retirement, Sharon resided in Wimberley, Smithville, and Bastrop, Texas. She is survived by three sons, Gary Davis Hicks Jr. - wife Darlene Whyte, Cary Dean Hicks - wife Kelly, and Rocky Douglas Hicks - wife Barbie, her brother, Gibby Dean - wife Rhonda and her sister Kayla Brakefield - husband Michael, twelve grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and her best friend and caregiver, Maddie Robertson. Sharon was known for her sharp wit, verbal and writing skills, intelligence, and great love of humanity. She will be greatly missed.
