Sara Long

March 4, 1928 — February 12, 2017

Sara Zerrilda Peyton Long, 88, passed away in Round Rock, Texas on February 12th, 2017 after a short illness.

Sara, the first of three children, was born to loving parents James Henry Peyton and Etta Mae Raborn on March 4th, 1928. Sara grew up during the Great Depression, but was blessed to never go for want and always had enough to share with those less fortunate. Her father, James, was a railroad Road Master, and when an unfortunate person or family found themselves at the railroad station, Sara's mother, Etta Mae, would bring them in, give them a hot meal, let them wash up and pack them a knapsack filled with bread, jam and jerky.

When Sara was 11, she met Harrison Greer Long, and decided at that time that her goal in life was to be his wife. In time Harrison joined the US Navy and served during WWII. All the while, Sara stayed true to him; they married on December 27th 1945 and spent many wonderful years together. Together they were blessed with four children and raised them in a Christian home where devotion to one's mate was continuously emphasized. They recently celebrated 71 years together. Sara and Harrison served the Lord in many ways in whichever congregation they attended. As their children grew up, they served Him by being stalwart stewards of the souls He had sent them; then, when their children had grown, Sara and Harrison moved to Leander, TX. They were warmly welcomed by the Leander Church of Christ, making their move easy. As members of the church for more than forty years they labored in the Lord's vineyard there by volunteering in many different places - including the Central Texas Children's Home, the World Bible School, and the church's Food Pantry. Sara kept busy and crocheted and knitted dozens of blankets, gloves, hats, and shawls for the Disaster Relief efforts of the church, as well as baby blankets, booties, and caps for every newborn she knew of. One of her favorite ways of giving was that each and every month Sara would buy a stuffed animal. She did this so that by the end of the year she had 12 donations for the Blue Santa Program. Sara truly took the lessons she learned by watching her mother and used those lessons to guide her in ways to serve the Lord her entire life.

Sara is preceded in death by her beloved parents; her dear sister, Dorothy Juanice Peyton Yows; and her sons, Billy Jim Long and David Harrison Long.

Left to share her memory is her husband, who was her longtime friend, companion, and the love of her life, Harrison Greer Long, her daughter, Sheryl Elizabeth Long Belnap (husband Randal); her son, Larry Curtis Long (wife Cheverly); daughter in law, Kimberly Martin Long; 11 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her brother, Richard Arlon Peyton (wife Irene), 7 nieces, and 3 nephews, as well as many other friends, family, and brothers and sisters in Christ.

A celebration of Sara's life will be 5:00pm Saturday, March 4, 2017 at the Leander Church of Christ.
