"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7
Sandra Sue Hunter Reed, affectionally known as “Sister” was born in Bastrop, Texas on December 2, 1948, to Vel C. Hunter, Sr. and Ethel Aldridge Hunter. She was the only daughter of the three children born to them. Her grandparents were Lawyer Aldridge and Tennessee (Williams) Aldridge.
She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Rose Missionary Baptist Church.
Sandra attended the Old Emile School where she met many lifelong friends. She spent most of her life in the medical field in hospitals and private nursing care but most of her life she was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who cared not only for her family but for her nieces and nephews as well. Sandra’s home was a safe haven for many. She always showed love and hospitality to those around her and cared for and nurtured many as if they were her own.
She was married to Walter Reed in 1964 before he entered the United States Air Force. Together they traveled across the country and lived in California, Florida and Wichita Falls, Texas before moving back home to Bastrop. They were the proud parents of six boys: Robert Rodell Reed, Ronald Rodell Reed, Richard Rodell Reed, Rodney Rodell Reed, Rodrick Rodell Reed and Ryan Rodell Reed.
For many years Sandra and Walter and their sons and family have been strong advocates to FREE RODNEY REED. Rodney was wrongly convicted of a crime in Bastrop County and not only Bastrop County but people throughout the country have rallied to free him. After her husband’s death in 2015 Sandra and her son Rodrick and the rest of the family traveled across the country with the Innocence Project and many legal staff and advocates to get the message out to the public. She appeared on television, radio and newspapers speaking out for her son and others on death row. Unfortunately, the struggle to free her son continues today. It is up to us to continue the fight to free Rodney so that her advocacy will not be in vain and another innocent man is lost to the criminal justice system.
Sandra was preceded in death by her parents, brother Leslie James Hunter, grandparents, husband and son Richard Reed and many other loved ones.
She is survived by her five sons, brother Vel C. Hunter, Jr., 13 grandsons, 1 granddaughter Brittany Reed, 16 great grandchildren, a faithful cousin, Faye Thomas Terrell and a host of other family and friends who will forever love and cherish her memory.
