Raymond (Tata) Hernandez, age 70, went to be with our Lord on August 15, 2025. He was born in Brownsville, Texas, and was a man deeply loved by his family and community.
He is survived by his devoted partner, Joleta Huckabee; his children, Nati (Victor), Mati (Buck), Nick (Tricia), and Simon (Vanessa); and his beloved grandchildren, Brianna, Dezarae, Jacob, Simon, Victor III, Lauren, Sammy, Eugene, Alejandra, Esperanza, Kimberly, and Estrella. He is also survived by his cherished great-grandchildren, Leilani, Roman, Brandon, and Viviana.
Raymond is preceded in death by his parents, Natividad and Reymundo; his siblings, Chavela, Gilbert, and Eva; and Rosa (Rogie), his wife of more than 40 years and the mother of his children. We find comfort in knowing they are reunited in Heaven, watching over us together.
Though he completed only a ninth-grade education, Raymond was one of the smartest men we knew. He had the gift of resourcefulness—able to make a dollar out of a dime—and always found a way to provide. He lived by faith, reminding us that “the Lord will provide.” He gave selflessly, even when it meant going without, and taught us that a true relationship with God mattered more than religion alone.
Raymond was also known for his sense of humor—he was a jokester whose laugh was infectious, made all the more memorable by his signature gappy smile. He loved to cook and share meals with his family. His favorite foods were Philly cheesesteaks, wings, and menudo, and he always made sure everyone had a full plate.
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, August 29, 2025 at Marrs Jones Newby Funeral Home in Bastrop, Texas. Viewing will start at 3:00 PM, memory sharing at 5:00 PM with sermon at 6:00 PM. Last goodbyes will be at 6:30 PM.
There will be a reception beginning at 7:00 PM at American Legion in Bastrop, Texas immediately following the service
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Centro Cristiano Puerta del Cielo in Bastrop, Texas, in Raymond’s honor.
Raymond “Tata” Hernandez will forever be remembered as a man of wisdom, faith, laughter, and love—a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and partner who left a lasting mark on every life he touched.
