Miriam Cecelia Schuelke

October 13, 1922 — November 21, 2023

Bastrop

Miriam Cecelia Schuelke, 101, of Bastrop, Texas, was called home to be with Jesus on November 21, 2023.

Miriam was born in Coupland, TX on October 13, 1922 to Emil and Martha Wernli.  She attended Taylor High School graduating in May 1940.  Following high school, she joined the workforce going to work for the Cotton Company, Pecan Company, and a Lawyer’s Office in Taylor, Texas.

Miriam met the love of her life, Mitchell (Mike) Schuelke Jr in Taylor at a local skating rink after being introduced by a mutual friend. Shortly after meeting Mike, who served in the army, Mike was deployed to Italy during WWII.  As a token of her love for him, Miriam sent her high school ring with him overseas to remember her by.  Their love continued to blossom as they wrote letters back and forth to stay in touch. Upon Mike’s return from war, the two were excited to start their lives together. The two were married on May 1, 1946 in Coupland, Texas. Soon after, Miriam and Mike started a family of their own having two children, Sharon Franke and James Schuelke.

Miriam loved all life had to offer, but Miriam’s favorite role was that as a grandparent. Miriam treasured her time with grandkids and great grandkids and loved making memories with them.  Teaching them patience, kindness, and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Miriam was passionate about her role as Church Pianist/Organist beginning her career at the Coupland Church, then concluding her career at the First United Methodist Church in Bastrop for forty years. Miriam was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, devoting her time and energy to the church and serving her community.

Everyone who knew Miriam knew how much she loved traveling with the Senior Center Group all across the country. When she wasn’t traveling she devoted her time to the First National Bank and the Nursing Home. She also enjoyed game nights with the 42 club and the 10,000 club.

Miriam will always be remembered for her servants’ heart, listening ear, always having an open door and devotion to her family and friends. We’ll always imagine hearing her say “Oh my stars” one more time. We couldn’t have asked for a better mother, grandmother and friend and will miss Miriam every day. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her for years to come.

Miriam was preceded in death by her parents Emil and Martha Wernli, brother Nolan Wernli, husband Mike Schuelke Jr. and son James Schuelke. She is survived by her daughter Sharon Franke; grandchildren Keith, Krista and husband Randy, Kara and husband BJ, Brian and husband Sam; great grandchildren Courtney and husband Ryan, Tyler and wife Hazen, Kaitlynn and husband Tyler, Chyann and husband Eli, Chance, Kipp, Keagan, Hannah and Kinley, as well as great-great grandchildren Wyatt, Adler, and Kayson.
