Bastrop

Micheal Randolph “Mike” Patterson, 82, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2024.

Mike was born on July 3, 1941 in Houston, Texas to Millard R. And Virginia Sapp Patterson. He grew up exploring the woods near his home, tending to the family’s chickens, and caring for their milk cow, Lady Cow. He also witnessed the transformation of the city and had many stories of watching the construction of Interstate Highway 10 from his backyard as a young boy. He graduated from Galena Park High School in 1959, where he played football and golf.

After attending the University of Texas at Austin, Mike joined the United States Marine Corps followed by several years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. A proud Marine (“once a Marine, always a Marine”), Mike could be counted on to sing enthusiastically any time he heard the Marine Corps Hymn.

On November 11, 1961, he married the love of his life, Barbara Diane McNeill, and together they settled in Pasadena, Texas to raise three children: Jeff, Scott, and Lisa. A devoted husband and father, he loved nothing more than to spend time with his family. A founding member of St. Hyacinth Catholic Church in Deer Park, Texas, Mike lived a life of deep personal faith, and served as a mass lector, eucharistic minister, and member of the Knights of Columbus.

During his career as an Engineering Draftsman, Mike worked at NASA – Johnson Space Center during the Apollo missions before joining Shell Oil Company, where he led the implementation of computer-aided design and documentation management for the Shell Deer Park Manufacturing Complex. His expertise in technology implementation allowed him to continue consulting even after his retirement in 2000.

Upon his retirement, Mike and Diane relocated to Bastrop, near his father’s hometown of Smithville. Mike enjoyed woodworking, hunting, and the outdoors. He frequently commented that he felt closer to God when he was outdoors enjoying nature.

Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Diane McNeill Patterson, his parents, Millard R. and Virginia Sapp Patterson; his sister, Jeannene Ann Patterson Lanford; and brothers-in law, David James McNeill, Jr. and Donald Joseph McNeill. He is survived by his children, Jeff and wife Rae, Scott, and Lisa; his grandsons, Connor and wife Railey, Spencer, Ryan, Michael, and Daniel; a great-grandson, Camden; his sisters-in law Kathleen Bradley McNeill and Cassandra McNeill Hunter and husband Joe, and many nieces and nephews.
