Juan Jose "J.J." Hinojosa, 85, of Austin, Texas, retired Marine Corp Gunnery Sergeant, passed away Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at Silver Pines Nursing Home in Bastrop, TX.

J.J. was born on June 26, 1936 in Mercedes, TX to Alfredo and Eva Hinojosa. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic High School and joined the Marine Corps after graduating high school in 1954. While stationed in Hawaii, J.J. met his wife, Fujie Koshiyama, on a blind date and they married in 1956. J.J. was a drill instructor and served a one-year tour in Vietnam. After serving in Vietnam, he was stationed throughout the country including, San Diego, California, Ft. Leavenworth Kansas, and retired in Texas. He attended Texas Southmost College in Brownsville, TX. After retiring from the Marines, J.J. was a city manager in the HR division for the city of Brownsville. Later, he ran a public storage facility in Corpus Christi and another in Austin. J.J. had a bigger than life personality, maintaining his booming drill instructor voice, but was a big teddy bear to all who had the pleasure of meeting him. J.J. was a wonderful family man and was always seeking adventure and fun, whether it was riding mini-bikes with his kids, going to the beach, or spending time with family and friends. He had a good-natured, generous heart and always sought to ensure his loved ones were taken care of.

J.J. was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Fujie Koshiyama; infant son, Mark; and parents, Alfredo and Eva Hinojosa.

J.J. is survived by his children, John Gary Hinojosa, Kim Tolentino and spouse Albert Tolentino, and Miles D. Hinojosa and spouse Karen Hinojosa; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Nicholas Hinojosa, Stephanie Hinojosa, Adam Hinojosa, Leigh Hinojosa, Miles Hinojosa, and Amanda Tolentino-Mathews; three brothers, Gaspar Hinojosa, Alfredo Hinojosa, and Enrique Hinojosa.

Visitation will be Friday, October 1, 2021 from 5:00pm-7:00pm at Marrs-Jones-Newby Funeral Home in Bastrop, TX. A military funeral will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio on Monday, October 18, 2021 at 10:45am.
