Margaret Jane Lockridge Tomlin, affectionately known as Janie, was born on January 20, 1930, in Lometa, Texas. She departed from this world on July 9, 2025, in Bastrop, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, dedication, and service to others.
A proud graduate of Goldtwaithe High School in 1947, Janie pursued her passion for nursing by attending Scott and White Nursing School for one year before continuing her education at the Brackenridge Hospital School of Nursing in Austin. Demonstrating remarkable determination and leadership, she graduated as president of her class in 1951.
Throughout her career, Janie dedicated herself to improving the lives of countless individuals. Beginning her professional journey as an intern, she spent nine years specializing in allergist care before serving for eight years at M.H.M.R., where she worked her way up to the esteemed position of Director of Nursing. Her commitment to community well-being extended beyond her professional work; Janie volunteered for 18 years with the American Cancer Society and Reach to Recovery, through which she supported fellow survivors as a breast cancer survivor herself.
Her final chapter in her career encompassed ten years as a school nurse at Bastrop High School, where she not only cared for students but also contributed significantly by assisting in the development of policies and procedures and facilitating a pharmacology teaching course for medical aides. She retired as a Senior Nurse, having made an indelible impact on the healthcare community.
Janie found joy in various hobbies, including sewing, reading, quilting, and yard work, but her greatest delight came from spending time with her family, particularly her children and grandchildren. She cherished her role as a mentor, especially in contributing to her church’s Sunday School and Vacation Bible School programs.
Among her proudest accomplishments was earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 1977, as well as enjoying a blessed 64 years of marriage with her husband, whom she often described as a great man who loved her completely. Janie's family was central to her life, and she was honored to be the mother of two wonderful boys.
She is survived by her sister Patricia Shannon, her brother Thomas Lockridge , her sister Joy Shrum, her son D. Keith Tomlin, her grandson Roy Phillip Tomlin, her granddaughter Lucinda Erin Tomin, and her great-granddaughters Hailey Pogue and Aspen B. Pogue. Janie was preceded in death by her son David K. Tomlin, her parents Azalea and Oscar Lockridge, and her siblings Eunice Curry, Averill Ann Egger, and James Lockridge .
Visitation will be held on July 19, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a Celebration of Life beginning at 11:00 AM, both at Marrs Jones Newby Funeral Home in Bastrop, Texas.
Janie’s life was a testament to the goodness that one person can bring to the world. Her legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to service will forever be remembered by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
