Janet Kay Fohn Hendrix was born the fourth child of Elmer (Skeet) and Ruby Fohn of Rockne, Texas. Janet started at Sacred Heart School at the age of five years with Larry, who would eventually become her husband of over fifty-seven years. Janet and Larry married in Rockne in 1967. They lived in Austin for four years before returning to Rockne to raise their son Chad and their newborn daughter, Lori.
Nothing in this world was as important to Janet as her children until her two grandchildren, Bryan and Kacey James were born. Both her children and grandchildren had to share the spotlight when Braxton, her first great-grandson was born. One of Janet’s joys in life was taking her grandsons to school in the mornings. Janet’s parents were also important to her, and she showed her love for her parents by visiting daily, whether they were at home or in assisted care.
Janet’s childhood was filled with adventures at the family ranch in Hondo, and using her Lucky 13 fishing lure in any pond that might have a fish. She loved watching westerns with her Grandpa Hefner and running around with the neighbor kids on Fohn Road. Cap pistols, bicycles, and bubble gum were a big part of her childhood days.
Janet attended Incarnate Word in San Antonio in preparation to enter the convent until love of family and friends in Rockne called her home. She attended Bastrop High School and was well-known for organizing parties and showing school spirit at sporting events. Janet and Larry began dating in their junior year and married three years later at Sacred Heart Church in Rockne.
Janet worked in Austin in the printing industry as a production planner for ten years before deciding to become a part-time stay-at-home Mom. She later worked both full and part-time for the Callahan Organization for forty-one years as a bookkeeper/office manager. Janet had the unique pleasure of working with her son for over twenty years, creating an even stronger mother-son bond.
After fourteen years of teaching in Houston, Lori returned home to teach at Bastrop High School. Janet and Lori spent time together most every day, planning the days ahead or simply enjoying each other’s company.
Whether serving on the Parish Council, teaching CCD, helping with Little League activities, or delivering Meals on Wheels in her community, Janet showed her love for people and concern for others. If she met someone new, they became her friend in a few short minutes. Her warm smile and spirited sense of humor brought enjoyment and comfort to many.
Janet and Larry vacationed at a number of National Parks and loved traveling in the western United States. On weekend vacations, she loved sitting on the dock of the company vacation house in Rockport for hours catching anything that would bite. Janet and Lori took occasional trips to Las Vegas; more often, Janet organized trips to Coushatta in Kinder, Louisiana. Janet, along with her mother, daughter, siblings, friends, and nieces, enjoyed the travel and laughter that encompassed these journeys. Janet loved the lights and bells of the slot machines, but she really missed the ringing of the dollar slots when they still used real silver dollars.
Janet is survived by her husband of fifty-seven years, her son Chad (Sandy), daughter Lori (Paul), her grandson Bryan (Jenny), her great grandson Braxton, her siblings, nieces and nephews, and numerous close friends. She is preceded in death by her grandson Kacey James, her mother Ruby, her father Skeet, and her brother Jerry.
