Herb was born in Hondo, TX on November 7, 1930, and attended college at the University of Houston on a 4-year baseball scholarship along with his older brother, earning a degree in Business Administration. In his college years, he was a member of the 1951 NCAA Division | Missouri Valley Conference championship baseball team and remained an avid baseball fan and golfer throughout his life.

He and Janie moved to Bastrop in 1990 and remained together until her death in 2011. His later years were blessed with the companionship of his dear friend, Fleeta Cunningham.
