Herbert J. Boon

November 7, 1930 — October 7, 2023

Herbert Jerome Boon passed away on October 7, 2023, in San Marcos, TX. A longtime resident of Bastrop, Herb was also a former president of the Chamber of Commerce and enjoyed a long association with the Pine Forest Golf Club. He remained active in the Calvary Episcopal Church before moving into assisted living in 2022.

Herb was born in Hondo, TX on November 7, 1930, and attended college at the University of Houston on a 4-year baseball scholarship along with his older brother, earning a degree in Business Administration. It was there he met the love of his life, Carolyn Jean Mitchell, affectionately known as Janie, whom he married in 1949. In his college years, he was a member of the 1951 NCAA Division | Missouri Valley Conference championship baseball team and remained an avid baseball fan and golfer throughout his life.

Herb retired from his job as an Accounts Manager with Maurice Pincoffs Company, Inc. in 1985 and pursued a lifelong dream of opening his own business, Hardwood Doors & Mantels, Inc. He and Janie moved to Bastrop in 1990 and remained together until her death in 2011. His later years were blessed with the companionship of his dear friend, Fleeta Cunningham.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Volney H. and Evelyn M. Boon, his brother John Earl Boon, and his sister Joan Boon King. He leaves behind a grateful and loving family: children, Karen Montgomery of Santa Fe, NM, Sharon Bordenave of Lablachère, France, Michael J. Boon of Kyle, TX, Belinda Boon of Akron, OH, and Rebecca G. Boon of Santa Fe, NM; grandchildren, Jeremy Boon-Bordenave of New York, NY, Soncire L. Boon of Buda, TX, and Cody L. M. Boon of San Antonio, TX; and great-grandchildren, Lilliana Boon, Alessandra Boon, Jett Boon, Henry Boon-Bordenave, and James Boon-Bordenave.

In honor of Herb’s memory, the family respectfully suggests donations to the Calvary Episcopal Church of Bastrop, local Little League baseball, or charity of your choice.
