Diane Kathe (Moehle) Long of Bastrop, Texas passed away on February 2, 2022, in Austin, Texas at the age of 78.
Diane was born on January 14, 1944 in La Grange, Texas to the late Ernest A. Moehle and Esther Roitsch Moehle. Diane grew up in Bastrop, attended Bastrop public schools and graduated from Bastrop High School in 1962. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with degrees in English and Secondary Education in 1966.
It was in the First Grade in Bastrop public schools where she met her future husband, Raymond A. Long of Bastrop, Texas. They were married May 31, 1964 in Bastrop. After marriage and graduation, she assumed the role of a Navy wife in Newport, Rhode Island; Fort Meade (Laurel), Maryland; Barbers Point, Hawaii and subsequently moved to Bastrop, Texas where they raised their family. For 32 plus years Diane shared ownership, management, and administrative responsibilities of Long’s Star Mart Foods with her husband, and was the owner operator of the Bastrop Sears Catalog Store for almost 20 years.
As a young girl, Diane enjoyed spending summers on her maternal Grandparents farm in Fayette County. At home in Bastrop, she and friends enjoyed climbing trees and exploring caves along the Colorado River bank behind her house. Diane was an avid football fan, reader, history buff, and especially enjoyed quilting, needle felting and rug hooking with her friends at the Bastrop Senior Center. She particularly enjoyed going to quilting, arts & crafts and rock & gem shows with her friends. She took great pride in working with a close friend to prepare the Thanksgiving Alter at the First Methodist Church for many years. Diane loved the Lost Pines area of Texas, with its diverse flora & fauna and was devastated by the loss of all her favorite trees in the Bastrop Complex Wildfire of 2011. Replanting native vegetation and baby Loblolly Pines became a priority.
Diane enjoyed travel including an Inside Passage Cruise to Alaska – Fairbanks to Vancouver, a Hawaiian Island and Republic of Kiribiti cruise. She enjoyed annual road trips to all corners of the US for Navy unit reunions as a member of the US Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association. These trips allowed her to revisit many special locations in the Western US that had come to love as child on family vacations. Diane loved her dogs and had many breeds over the years including Mutts, Dachshunds, Great Pyrenees, Chow, German Shepard, Gordon Setter and Blood Hounds.
Diane is survived by her husband of 57 years, Raymond A. Long of Bastrop; Jennifer K Colby and husband, Chris of Bastrop; David R. Long and wife, Jennifer of Bastrop; Steven A. Long and wife, Tammy of Bastrop; and grandchildren, Mitchell, Percy, Gracie, and Taylor of Bastrop; and several cousins and in-laws. She is also survived by Rudi her Dachshund friend of 8 years.
