Bastrop

Charley Carl Kirk, of Cedar Creek, Texas died peacefully on his 77th birthday Sunday, June 9, 2024, at his home surrounded by family.

Charley Kirk was born June 9, 1947, in Cameron, Texas to Ray and Jewel (Edwards) Kirk. He grew up in the Sharp Community (Milam County) where he helped his grandparents on the farm, tilling the land, picking cotton, and working at several cotton gins. Charley attended Sharp High School and graduated from Rockdale High in 1965. Following graduation, he attended heavy equipment operating school at Texas A&M and worked for Capital Acoustical and became a member of the Carpenter Local 1266 union.

In 1968, he married his high-school sweetheart, Kaye Taylor, on October 26, 1968, at St Austin’s Catholic Church in Austin, Texas. They bought property in Bluebonnet Acres and built a beautiful home where they raised their children. Charley was one of the first volunteer firefighters when the Bluebonnet Acres Fire Department was founded. Charley was a simple man yet lived his life to the fullest. He never asked for anything, but he gave generously. You always knew where you stood with him. Charley was a wealth of information, and many looked up to him. He was funny, sarcastic, and he always had a story to tell. You could always find him in his garden (that was so big he could feed Bastrop County). He also loved fishing, hunting, tending to his cattle and playing with the grandkids.Charley was preceded in death by his parents; In-laws Jodie and Juanita Taylor; and niece Corinne Wilson all of Rockdale, Texas. He is survived by his wife of 55 ½ years, Kaye Kirk, daughter Charlene Roberts and husband David, son Charley Ray Kirk all of Bastrop, Texas. Sister Linda Schwalbe and husband Gerd of Converse, Texas; brothers Robert Sides and wife Paula, Kenneth Sides, Johnny Sides and wife Rochelle all of Rockdale, Texas. Grandchildren Michael Hancock and wife Sarah of Bentonville, Arkansas, Allison Kirk and Megan Kirk of Bastrop, Texas. Great grandchildren Booker Hancock and Brazos Hancock of Bentonville, Arkansas.
