Carl Spooner

CARL BENNETT SPOONER was born July 22, 1931 in Bastrop, Texas to Earl Spooner and Velma Rathmann Spooner.  He resided in Bastrop, TX his entire life of 91 years. Carl died November 24, 2022 in Austin, Texas after a brief illness.

He attended Bastrop Schools and graduate in the class of 1948.   Upon graduation he worked for the Texas Parks Board delivering materials statewide.   In 1949 he began his military career at Camp Swift in Bastrop, TX with the Texas National Guard.   He moved to Camp Mabry in Austin, TX when the shop, CSMS #2 changed locations.   He remained there until his civil service retirement in 1986.   He continued his service in the Army National Guard as a Command Sargent Major until his military retirement in 1991.  During his career in the military he received numerous awards, both National Guard and Army, for outstanding service.

He was a life member of the Bastrop First United Methodist Church, a 67 year member and past master of Mina Masonic Lodge #1456 in Bastrop, TX, and served as Fire Chief for the Bastrop Volunteer Fire Department until his retirement, and was a member and referee with the Southwest Basketball Officials Association.  He was a dedicated Bastropian and served in many capacities.

He was preceded in death by his father Earl Spooner, mother Velma Rathmann Spooner, brother Joe Earl Spooner (wife Wanda), brother Bobby Spooner.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Froehlich Spooner, son David Spooner (wife Peggy) of Portland, TX, son William Spooner (wife Gina) of Bastrop, TX, grandchildren Matthew Spooner (Kaci) of San Antonio, TX, Monica Spooner of Spring Branch, TX, Ashley Spooner Cox (husband Dalton) of College Station, TX, Christopher Spooner (wife Rebecca) of Bastrop, TX, one great grandson, Holden (Matthew/Kaci), and many cousins.

Donations may be sent to Bastrop First United Methodist Church,  Mina Masonic Lodge #1456, Bastrop, TX, or the charity of your choice.

Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Thursday, December 1, 2022 at Marrs Jones Newby Funeral Home.  The funeral home is located at 505 Old Austin Highway in Bastrop, Texas.

The funeral service will begin at 10:00am on Friday, December 2, 2022 at the First United Methodist Church of Bastrop with Masonic services and burial following at Fairview Cemetery.

The church is located at 1201 Main Street in Bastrop Texas.
